We have to feed our loved ones and ourselves dinner. Every. Single. Day.
And not just any dinner! We want dinner to be nutritious. We want it to taste good. We want it to be quick and easy. And we want everyone to eat it - happily.
Impossible?
I have tried it all. Letting the kids help plan dinner. Feeling like a short order cook while trying to make multiple dishes for a single meal so that everyone will eat. Or worse, making myself a different meal than the rest of the family in order to stay on my "diet." (And I may or may not end up sneaking something off their plates or finishing up the leftovers so they "don't go to waste.")
So I thought about it. And I researched. I experimented. And yes, I even went to Pinterest looking for answers.
Then I hit on the idea of a meal plan.
It's not a new concept. We all do some form of meal planning, at least some of the time. We write a quick list of dinner ideas as we head out the door to the grocery store. Or if really pressed for time, we figure out dinner ideas while roaming the aisles of the grocery store and hope we don't forget to pick up all of the ingredients for the ONLY meal we know the entire crew will eat for dinner.
Maybe we're more proactive than that. We sit down with a notepad and a recipe book and decide that - once and for all! - we're going to think ahead about this dinner idea problem. So we get out the recipe books and make a chart, or a list, or really get creative and we assign themes to days like Taco Tuesday and Pizza Fridays and plan out a week or two of meals.
And that kind of meal planning works, really it does - until next week when we have to sit down all over again and come up with some new ideas. Because if we feed our kids and our husbands the same meals every week, they'll surely launch some form of protest. Actually, if I fed myself the same meals every week, I'd protest too!
Soon we are back where we started, standing in front of the refrigerator at 5:30 PM (whiny, cranky kids in the background optional!) wondering what we are going to make for dinner?!
